The current Marine Elementary School was the newest school in the newly formed Triad Community Unit School District #2 in 1957. It was also the culmination of the final efforts of the Marine School District # 36. Triad was formed in 1954 by consolidating the independent Marine, Troy, and St. Jacob school districts into one larger district. Triad started construction on the new Marine Grade School in 1955 after the former Marine District #36 proposed (and voters approved) a bond measure for the new school before consolidation took place. The current school building was built to replace a crowded, 75-year-old two-story building. This older building was located where Marine City Park (Tank Park) now stands. Kindergarten through 8th grade students walked through the doors of the new school building (the current Marine Elementary School) for the first time in August of 1957. Village Board President George Pence presided over the dedication ceremony in November of that year. In his speech, Pence proudly proclaimed that once Triad dedicated the new Marine School and finished construction on the new High School (currently Triad Middle School) Triad would “take its place among the best-equipped districts in the state”. The pride on display during that dedication ceremony 68 years ago this month, is still apparent today in the tremendous support the Marine community provides to their students and staff at Marine Elementary School.

Do you remember?
When Triad High School opened in 1999, there were plans for expansion of one classroom wing as well as the addition of an auditorium. Unfortunately those plans had to be cut short. The solution of a cafetorium has served us over the years, but now the space is just too small.
Today, our students and community need:
· An auditorium that properly showcases our talented fine and performing arts students
· Additional space for Career and Technical Education (CTE) and science labs
· A large space to gather for events like parent orientation and honors night
· A dedicated space for lunch

Aging Infrastructure
Triad Middle School opened in 1959 (65 years ago) as Triad High School. The aging infrastructure does not hold up to today’s educational standards and student needs.
The 945 students at TMS are forced to navigate cramped hallways during passing periods, which could pose a safety risk in the event of an emergency requiring a quick evacuation.
Additionally, the cafeteria is too small to accommodate students in fewer than five lunch periods, which begin as early as 10:20 a.m. and end at 1:30 p.m.

The Highland Area Community Foundation (HACF) is a phenomenal organization that helps other community organizations within the boundaries of the Highland Community School District #5, Marine Township, St. Jacob Township, Village of St. Rose, and St. Rose Township. Even in a great district like Triad, there is only so much money to go around each year. Marine Elementary has utilized the Highland Area Community Foundation Grant for many years to help fund projects and needs that may not have been completed without their assistance. Such projects include a new whiteboard in our first-grade classroom, Social/Emotional Learning supplies for students in the classroom, board games for indoor recess, playground equipment and soccer goals for outdoor recess, and furniture for the library just to name a few. If it’s focused on children and improving their lives or educational experiences, the Highland Area Community Foundation is eager to help. This year the HACF granted funds of nearly $1300 to Marine Elementary for an extra large whiteboard in Mrs. Gough’s 1st Grade classroom. The original chalkboard was 68 years old and was showing its age. Thank you to the Highland Area Community Foundation for their continued support!
